My Rating (out of 5): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Were Song of Achilles written by any other author, I probably would not have read it. Not because other authors are unexceptional; but because the story of Achilles is one I have heard, read and seen too many times. It takes a writer in the class of Miller to breathe new life into a story that has been around for as long as recorded history
The book does not begin with Achilles, but with his lover, Patroclus, an exiled prince who had problems with his father. Patroclus begins by telling us of the lack of compatibility between his parents and the circumstances that led to his exile.
During his exile, he would meet prince Achilles, Son of Peleus and sea-nymph Thetis. Thus beginning a friendship and romance that would define their lives and would continue even in death.
A beautiful beautiful story that only Madeline Miller could have re-told. And boy, she did not disappoint.
