The Art of War by Sun Tzu

Title: The Art of War Author: Tzu, Sun Publisher: Harper Press Pages: 170 Date Read: 29 July 2018 Bookshelves: read My Rating (out of 5): ⭐⭐⭐⭐ To think that this book still has an unwavering relevance despite being conceived over 2000 years ago. I admire the fact that i could remove myself from the art of warfare being discussed, and was still able to relate almost seamlessly to the nuggets Sun Tzu dropped consistently over 67 pages. ...

The Sicilian (The Godfather, #2) by Mario Puzo

Title: The Sicilian (The Godfather, #2) Author: Puzo, Mario Publisher: Ballantine Books Pages: 416 Date Read: 23 July 2018 Bookshelves: read, favorites My Rating (out of 5): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ No other author has been known to sustain this level of textual brilliance across this many pages of dense prose. Paragraph upon paragraph, Puzo was able to deliver the goods without a single compromise on language, simplicity and elegance. In a number of ways, this book made me realise the laxity that characterised my rating of books upon completion. By this I mean Puzo made the five or so authors I read before him look unworthy of their craft. And when I went back, in retrospect, to remove a Goodreads star or two from these books, I did it with no sense of anger or disrespect to authors of these books but rather out of fairness to Puzo. He raised the bar so high and the whole of his book’s 413 pages are among those that I will not forget in a very long time ...

Season of Crimson Blossoms by Abubakar Adam Ibrahim

Title: Season of Crimson Blossoms Author: Ibrahim, Abubakar Adam Publisher: Cassava Republic Press Pages: 313 Date Read: 04 July 2018 Bookshelves: read My Rating (out of 5): ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I reckon that the best thing about this book, besides its brilliant style, were the proverbs that introduced every chapter. I found the prose very gentle and the many metaphors deserving of highlights. That said, i did have some problems at the beginning as there were a lot of names, as well as a lot of sub-stories and i thought that these distracted an impatient reader from the core of the story which was essentially about the travails of an old lady given a second chance at love; love in one of its wildest forms. ...

The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins

Title: The Selfish Gene Author: Dawkins, Richard Publisher: Oxford University Press Pages: 360 Date Read: 25 June 2018 Bookshelves: read My Rating (out of 5): ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Felt good finding a book that for some weeks made me forget the tired religious explanation of how things, as we know it, came to be. This book made me understand that altruism and selfishness could actually pass for synonyms. The book also did make me understand that, in Dawkin language, we are nothing but pencils, or survival machines if you like, in the hands of our genes. ...
