My Rating (out of 5): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

It was around this time last year I discovered that Shafak had published another title. I was understandably excited as I knew I had something to look forward to in the next year. To be clear, Shafak is my favourite author alive; a title the author has earned through the quality, style and variety of her works. So, when I picked up Shafak’s latest title halfway into the year as life began asking me difficult questions, it was with a mix of expectation, enthusiasm and the promise of a badly-needed escape.

I began this book with understandable enthusiasm and very high expectations after completing the author’s The Echo of Old Books sometime last year. I also began this book as a means to escape my lived reality, which did not help with expectations. In truth, I asked a lot from this book and I am pleased to report that the book held its own despite my heavy expectations.

A great book about family, gender, trauma and survival. The book was set in 1950s China. And through the eyes of the narrator, Hai, we understand the heartbreaking reality of what it means to be a girl/woman in China at a time of great cultural, geographic and economic flux.

This book began with some promise but I found the first few pages quite slow and it didn’t take long for my enthusiasm to start to wane.

The book begins with the details from the first book Kane and Abel, introducing the patriarchs and gave more context to the circumstances that made them sworn enemies. But we know in the first few pages that the story is not about these two men, but rather about Abel’s daughter Florentyna. The story takes us through her formative years, her love for Kane’s son, her other close relationships and how she would leverage these relationships much later in life to propel her to being the leader of the free world.

3.5 stars rounded up

It was difficult to love most of the characters in this book as the author made little effort to make the reader understand the motivations behind their actions. The characters lacked a certain complexity I have come to appreciate in works of fiction. It was as though the author aggregated popular stereotypes of how the Nigerian society demands people to be and designed characters solely around these rigid definitions. As a consequence, most of the characters were without nuance and soul.

My Rating (out of 5): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

A very sad book indeed. In this book, Emecheta writes about a culture that ties a woman’s worth to the responsibilities of motherhood.

First, you must be a mother. Then you must bear sons to carry your husband’s family name. And while raising these kids almost singlehandedly, languishing in penury because your husband went to fight in another man’s war, you must take responsibility for the failures and share none of the successes. You learn early on that the only reward for motherhood is a promise. A promise that your male children will be successful and take care of you. And if they eventually become successful and do not remember to repay your kindness, your task as a mother is to continue to wish them well. To be wholly content that you raised a success story. After all, you did not just birth a child; you birthed a male child. That is what you must aspire to be: a mother to male children. In the eye of culture, you are far better than a woman with no sons; or worse, a woman with no children.

My Rating (out of 5): ⭐⭐⭐⭐

In this book, as usual, Shafak holds the reader spellbound by the excellence of her words. Here, she writes about the Ottoman Empire, the art of construction, apprenticeship, war, plagues, and death. She writes of Sinan, the legendary architect responsible for the construction of some of the most famous mosques that stand to this day and the philosophy that guides his approach to design. She writes of Chota, a white elephant gifted to the sultan from the king of a faraway land. She tells of how decades of service and spectacle wove her into the very fabric of the city. She writes of Jahan, the elephant keeper, who would later train under Sinan and eventually raise buildings of his own. She writes of his search for love, his want for meaning and his quest for legacy. With an abundance of characters that stretch through decades, wars and plagues, this book was a slight departure from how a typical Shafak book would read.

Decently written. Makes a case for Islam as the only route to God. The arguments put forth in this text weren’t strong enough to sway one who didn’t already share an ideological bent as the author. I, therefore, think the book will mostly benefit believers and is unlikely to benefit anyone else. Which is ironic because believers are not the target audience of the book.

What do you do when you have no words for what you feel? How do you express yourself in ways language does not yet acknowledge as popular, or as normal? The author’s answer to these questions, well, was to curate a dictionary of nouns, verbs, and adjectives that capture the human experience in ways too subtle to be grasped by language as we know it. And as one who appreciates words, I cannot think of a greater labour of love.

The best time to have written this review was five weeks ago when I completed the book amidst excitement and measured melancholy. Part of why I stalled was because I felt I did not possess the language for the range of emotions I experienced while reading. So I waited. But the longer I lazed around for these words to somehow find me, the more I found the core of the book slipping away from me. Worried that there would be nothing left to write about when the right words eventually came, I resolved to freeze all these scattered emotions in words before all was lost to time.

I tried to combat my bias against short stories by reading this well-acclaimed Pulitzer winner. Upon finishing the book, my feelings are that of a familiar disappointment in the genre. Do not misunderstand: not all of the stories are bad; the third story was outstanding, and the last story was pretty decent. For most of the book, however, I just wanted to get the stories over with and what kept me going was the misplaced expectation that the next story would be better. Most, unfortunately, were not.

There is so much to love about the book right - from the trace of poetry in the title, down to the style through which the wisdom in its paragraphs was communicated. The reader is introduced to Enzo, a dog as cute as he is wise. We see the world through Enzo’s eyes as he lives through his master’s pain, loss, grief, and racing passions; while navigating his own bestial desires, superior emotions, age, and eventual mortality.

In this collection, Emtithal renders the details of pain and loss, family and war so vividly. While i find her written poetry beautiful, i am way more partial to her spoken word versions because consuming poems in a collection as personal as this without the guidance of the author almost strips the words of meaning and flattens the emotions these words were designed to inspire.

The art of writing, tethering words together, in a more exciting manner is one Westerfeld should incorporate. A good read, notwithstanding.

This is a book you definitely want to lay your fingers on if you are anyone (Nigerian preferably) who loves to read about history. Violent political militarized history.

In fairness, the story was set out to be naturally interesting. It focused mainly on the coups and counter-coups, betrayals, violence and bloodbath that plagued the early years after Nigeria’s independence. However, it would be impossible as well as unfair to dismiss the excellent manner in which Max rendered the events year after year, event after event. The beautiful links, the semi-graphic narrative and the much needed metaphors combined in appropriate amounts made the storytelling a worthwhile experience which made me paradoxically speed through the book while not wanting it to end at the same time.

In this book, Matt Haig attacks an existential question with empathy. He writes about roads not travelled and lives not lived. This book offers a calming perspective on living with regrets, informing us that we cannot conclude that a path we have not trod will be better for the simple fact that we have not trodded it. By following the story of Nora, we are reminded of how easy it is to mourn lives we did not live, friends we did not make, and work we did not do. We see how quickly regret of what was and longing for what could have been makes us forget the awesome things to be made out of the cards we are currently being dealt. I think the author did a fantastic job at communicating this perspective.

Title: Fifty Words for Rain
Author: Lemmie, Asha
Publisher: Dutton
Pages: 449
Date Read: 27 March 2021
Bookshelves: read
My Rating (out of 5): ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I particularly enjoyed that the author told the story through the characters’ own voices. I think this added colour to the book and made its plot more engaging than it would have otherwise been. You could almost feel the personality of these characters, and how their biases and experiences colour their perspective. My favourite character was Akiko and I wished more of the story was told in her voice.

It’s ironic how a book that begins with death has so much to say about life. My favourite thing about this book is probably how it pays equal attention to the central themes all through the story. It explored life, death, loss, survival and friendship and so much more. Shafak almost leaves it to the reader to decide what exactly the book is about.

Started quite nicely and certainly well written. However the author was trying to fit too much into the pages. As such, the story started featuring several transient characters who were of little consequence to the story. This made the book very difficult to follow.

I stopped reading after completing 25% of the book. Hence this review only represents my thoughts up until where I stopped.

I will start by saying Forna is an excellent writer. She does great things with words; which explains why I read (and smiled) through the opening pages with rare enthusiasm. She tells the story of people who do not know of a war about to come. She writes about how these people led their lives and their interconnectedness with each other, perhaps in too much detail. Forna attempted to write about the past and the present in alternate chapters, which is a great idea in theory. However, she lacked the clarity of execution and this was where my problems with the book began.

Were Song of Achilles written by any other author, I probably would not have read it. Not because other authors are unexceptional; but because the story of Achilles is one I have heard, read and seen too many times. It takes a writer in the class of Miller to breathe new life into a story that has been around for as long as recorded history

This was a very different, even disturbing book to read. But the book’s ability to disturb is a consequence of the author’s almost divine way with words. This is the sort of book that scars and scares as the story progresses but one’s decision to continue till the end speaks to the brilliance of the author.

Death comes for us all. And in this book death indeed comes for a 36 year old Stanford resident neurosurgeon. He tells us, in this book, how he lived and his quest to understand life’s meaning through medicine. But more importantly, he lets us examine death through the eyes of a man who gave people people a second chance at life.

An absolute masterpiece that draws wisdom from the folly and successes of history.

You see, many things were indeed remarkable about this book but what stood out for me was the way the author structured its content. First, he makes you realise why reading his book is a matter of compulsion by arguing that each and every one of us craves power whether in tacit and overt forms.

Circe struggles with self-worth as she tries to find her place among her beautiful sister nymphs and the vastness of her father’s kingdom. Too many times, she gets battered with harsh words from her gorgeous sisters and is regarded with scorn by both her parents.

Sadly I have to put this book down after a hundred or so pages. While it lasted, it was a well-written book with a brilliant style and amazing metaphors. But it lacked direction; lacked urgency. It is difficult to tell whether the lack of these things was the exact point of this book. Or whether this kind of prose was what the Man Booker judges wanted in 1997. But after 90 pages of hoping in silence that Arundhati would at least get to the point of her 400 paged book, I feel that I am at my limits. I have to walk away.

Before I regard this book merely as a work of fiction, this book was first a lecture in human psychology, a 350 paged ride in classical philosophy and a bible to hedonists and sybarites. I hear that this book was not well-received at the time of its release but Oscar sensibly put it best by saying that “The books that the world calls immoral are books that show the world its own shame.”

No other author has been known to sustain this level of textual brilliance across this many pages of dense prose. Paragraph upon paragraph, Puzo was able to deliver the goods without a single compromise on language, simplicity and elegance.
In a number of ways, this book made me realise the laxity that characterised my rating of books upon completion. By this I mean Puzo made the five or so authors I read before him look unworthy of their craft. And when I went back, in retrospect, to remove a Goodreads star or two from these books, I did it with no sense of anger or disrespect to authors of these books but rather out of fairness to Puzo. He raised the bar so high and the whole of his book’s 413 pages are among those that I will not forget in a very long time

I reckon that the best thing about this book, besides its brilliant style, were the proverbs that introduced every chapter. I found the prose very gentle and the many metaphors deserving of highlights.
That said, i did have some problems at the beginning as there were a lot of names, as well as a lot of sub-stories and i thought that these distracted an impatient reader from the core of the story which was essentially about the travails of an old lady given a second chance at love; love in one of its wildest forms.

Author: Dawkins, Richard
Publisher: Oxford University Press
Pages: 360
Bookshelves: read
My Rating (out of 5): ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Felt good finding a book that for some weeks made me forget the tired religious explanation of how things, as we know it, came to be. This book made me understand that altruism and selfishness could actually pass for synonyms. The book also did make me understand that, in Dawkin language, we are nothing but pencils, or survival machines if you like, in the hands of our genes.

This is a book you want to read to gain an insight into the existential realities of Nigeria’s struggling middle class. 29, Single and Nigerian was written with a beautiful sense of urgency that many African novels lack. I loved the way the author did not bore the reader with needless pages of prose. Given how concise the book was, I kid you not when I say that one sentence less could have rendered this book incomplete. The only explanation for this brilliance is that the author had a character limit - one that ended with the very last period. And oh! It was very easy on the eyes; almost to a fault.

In fact, things got so bad that i had to assume the book was translated in a honest bid to absolve the author of a well-deserved blame for making me go through 158 pages of torture.
The latter parts of the book was basically Bradbury trying so hard, with paragraphs of well-meaning quotes, to compensate for so much damage he effortlessly wreaked all-book-long.

Actual Rating : 4.75

What Bryson has done, effortlessly and excellently , in this book was to carve a worthy read out of the most soporific of subjects and most tedious of topics. In this book, the author painstakingly tries to give a simplified history of science and i must say, for the most part, did a decent job at it.

My Rating (out of 5): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Here, Mona Eltahawy, very passionately, tries to decry the middle-eastern system of patriarchy. Her anger stems from the reality that the clerics and policy makers have skilfully used a mix of religion, politics and culture to whip the Arab woman into perpetual submission. i find her take very interesting although there are a few of her opinions i do not agree with.

I read this book about ten years ago and it has stayed with me since.

The story begins with a man who had just been released from prison on a seven-year jail term for a rape he did not commit. Faced with the economic hardships of South-Western Nigeria and coupled with his ex-convict status, finding a job seemed like a frightening impossibility.
He finds his way to Northern Nigeria after being alerted by his friend of the region’s numerous opportunities. But things start to go wrong very fast after he turns down sexual advances from his friend’s wife. Along the line he meets this Sheik, to whom he has a striking resemblance and his life never remains the same again.
