My Rating (out of 5): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

There are authors whose books I read once per year. I do this because excellent writing is always in short supply and must be rationed accordingly. TJR is one of 2 authors (as of 2023) that occupy this elite list. You only need to read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo to quickly understand why.

Only beautiful things happen when you read an author whose style you trust. In many ways, reading them is akin to how you treat a lover– with patience. With them, you do not rush. You are gentle. And you are at peace knowing that they will ferry you home with care.

This was how I felt starting this book. I KNEW it was going to be an excellent read. And TJR did not disappoint. The characters are flawed and real; the story has the right markers for success and in the hands of a master such as TJR, I expected no less.

She writes of Carrie, her complex relationship with tennis and all that it took to get her to be the best in the sport. Through Carrie, we see that extreme success often comes with extreme consequences. We learn of redemption, parental love, perseverance and most of all, we learn of balance.

It goes without saying that this was a very well-written book. Definitely learnt a thing or two about the sport as well. What’s not to love !?

I remain a fan. Till next year!
